Omar Foundation also contacted other organizations in the area to achieve effective coordination. In particular, contact was established with the Abbottonian Medical Association (AMA), DHQ (Abbottabad), and SUNGI Development Foundation with the intent to promote effective coordination.

Omar Foundation in collaboration with supporters and philanthropists from across Pakistan initiated a fund-raising campaign. Additionally, donations of kind including tents, other makeshift shelter, and blankets were collected. Partners and friends, especially in Karachi, not only collected in-kind and cash donations, but also worked actively in procurement and shipment of the goods to Abbottabad for onward distribution to the affectees.

Linking with local partners

Omar Foundation contacted leaders/activists of its village-based partner organizations in the affected areas. Along with these partners Omar Foundation initiated the relief efforts.

Needs assessment

In the initial stages, Omar Foundation’s staff along with local activists of partner organizations initiated a needs assessment for relief. A list of the most affected areas was drawn up. Total number of households, affected population, and immediate needs were identified. Omar Foundation’s on-going needs assessment efforts generated data that was made the basis of targeting relief efforts. The needs assessment indicated the most affected areas, and provided details of the number of households affected as well as the total number of households in an affected area.

Supply line

A system of distribution was devised so that relief could reach the deserving. Meeting points were determined from where the relief goods from Abbottabad were delivered to the local activists who alongwith staff members of Omar Foundation transported them to affected areas and distributed them to the affectees. This supply line system not only ensured speedy delivery it also ensured that the relief reached those that needed it the most. In many cases, the affected areas were reached on foot. In one case this delivery mechanism proved hazardous as desperate survivors and/or criminal elements stopped the vehicle and looted the goods (similar incidents were reported from other parts of the affected areas). Identified survivors also arranged local transport and collected relief goods from Abbottabad and alongwith Omar Foundation staff delivered them to affectees in various areas.
